BLOODHOUND Carbon Brake Discs
Vibrant NDT Ltd has collaborated with the BLOODHOUND Engineering Team to evaluate the risk factors associated with the use of carbon-based friction brake discs. The friction brakes will only be applied at lower speeds of <250 mph, but at peak performance approaching the landmark 1000 mph, rotational wheel speeds will exceed 10,000 RPM, an unprecedented amount of rotational force in a land-based vehicle.
The brake discs will be subjected to such forces, and two brake discs of different sources were investigated in a PCRT / Destructive Spin interval tests.
The PCRT/ Spin tests produced a correlation related to the entire structural health, with reduction in the diagnostic resonant frequencies- generally a direct link to structural degradation- with increasing spin intensities, as seen below on the disc 'DACC':
